![]() ![]() Many vantage points along The Rim offer remarkable viewing opportunities of the mountains and valleys to the south. This massive escarpment, created by a fault line, presents a nearly vertical drop as much as 2,000 feet to the forested hills and desert below. The entire southern boundary of the district is defined by The Mogollon Rim, the southern edge of the great Colorado Plateau. The Black Mesa Ranger District extends from Leonard Canyon, south of Winslow east to the communities of Clay Springs and Pinedale. ![]() Never blindly trust directions given by a GPS - always double check road conditions along the suggested route BEFORE traveling. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is a source for road information across the state. For information on forest road conditions, call the Black Mesa Ranger District at (928)535-7300. Let others know where you plan to travel and when you expect to be home. Always carry extra clothing, food, blankets, and a cell phone. Outside of the Rim Lakes Recreation Area FR 300 South and FR 86 to Black Canyon Lake is currently closed for public safety due to snow.Īll forest roads on the district are impacted by snow, ice, and/or mud. Please avoid traveling on wet or muddy roads to avoid causing road and resource damage. Roads closed in their entirety include: Forest Roads 105 (Woods Canyon Road), 149 (Willow Springs Lake Road), 9350, 195, 100, 171 (including the Mogollon Rim Visitor Center parking area), 717, 180, 119, 9354, 84, 75, 208, 89, 115, 225, 120, 70, and all lesser roads throughout the western portions of the district. Roads partially affected by this closure include:įR 300 (Rim Road) from AZ Highway 260 to the Coconino National Forest boundaryįR 169 from Forest Road 300 to Forest Road 119įR 34 south of the old Chevelon Ranger Station site Winter storms have brought snow to the district, prompting a closure to all wheeled motor vehicles in the Rim Lakes Recreation Area. Forest Roads (FR) within the wheeled motor vehicle restricted area are now open to over-snow vehicles, cross-country skiing, and snow-shoeing. Many educational items are available for sale through Arizona Natural History Association, a cooperating not-for-profit organization dedicated to assisting public agencies with interpretation and educational programs and promoting general respect for the public lands in the Southwest.
